What’s Your Fiscal New Year’s Resolution?

June 30, 2014

Like Jan. 1, the fiscal new year is a time when many of us have an opportunity to start fresh. And I’m sure that many of us are approaching it in much the same way—with tighter budgets, greater pressures, and a drive to meet the demands of an increasingly clear and increasingly challenging vision for […]

Structured Content: The Next Generation of Web Content Editing Tools

June 23, 2014

WYSIWYG is dead. If that statement caused a reaction—whether a frown of worry or a smile—then you’re probably one the people throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine who uses our WYSIWYG, short for “what you see is what you get,” tools to edit Web content. In reality, WYSIWYG isn’t by any means dead, but it is getting […]

Building Awareness with Online Marketing Strategy

June 9, 2014

As faculty, you’re focused on your role at Johns Hopkins Medicine, whether that’s researching better ways to treat disease or translating that research to the clinic. But sometimes, you need to share what you do with the world. That’s where we come in. Online marketing can be a powerful tool for getting your message out, […]

Our Home Page: One Page with a Big Responsibility

June 2, 2014

Our website comprises thousands of other webpages, and thanks to search engines, visitors can come directly to any of them. But no single page on the site is as important as the home page. The home page hopkinsmedicine.org  has a big job. It reflects the values and ambitions of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the School […]

What’s Health Got to Do with It?

May 27, 2014

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the Internet Strategy team is focusing on consumer-oriented health content as a strategy for meeting the strategic priority of patient- and family-centered care. So it’s pretty exciting to introduce the new Healthy Aging section on hopkinsmedicine.org. Healthy Aging focuses on bringing consumers clear, actionable information about how […]

Managing Your Online Reputation

May 20, 2014

When we think about social media, most of us think of Facebook or Twitter. And most often, we make individual choices about our level of participation. However, a trend that practicing physicians need to be cognizant of is the increasing impact of physician ranking sites which provide basic information and allow the public to rate […]

Process. What is process?

May 12, 2014

Well, it can be a word used to explain a methodology of how to efficiently migrate from Point A to Point B with a predictable and intended outcome. It can also be a word used to explain a negative experience…as in, “What a process I endured registering my car at the DMV!”

The Internet Strategy Team: More than an Agency

April 28, 2014

Over my years here, I've attended hundreds of meetings to discuss potential web projects. And I can relate to our faculty and staff more than they may realize at how disappointing it is when conversations that begin with great visions and exciting ideas become derailed by talk of budgets and fee-for-service. It’s during these conversations […]

The Reason for Responsive Web Design

April 21, 2014

Look around you, and I'll bet you'll see people accessing the Web on a variety of different devices, most of which have different screen sizes: a 5-inch iPhone, a 7-inch Android tablet, a 13-inch laptop. The ways people access the Web can no longer be easily divided into just desktop versus mobile phone. When we […]

Social Media: A Great Customer Service Tool

April 14, 2014

Some people think of Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels only as ways to keep in touch with friends (and a few celebrities, too). But they can be much more than that if we look at them as tools for improving the way we serve our customers. And for Hopkins Medicine, they are very […]
